Iowa Interstate (IAIS) on Jan. 29 reported completing a new hazmat-training tank car to help prepare first responders across its 580-mile network.

The regional, which marked 40 years of service in 2024, credited its Safety and Operations team for the project and Raptor Tank Cleaning Services for donating cleaning services.

Displaying the Operation Lifesaver Inc. logo to promote rail safety education, the tank car is outfitted with railcar telemetry technology, including GPS location and load status monitoring. “This advanced technology enhances the safety and efficiency of our operations, demonstrating how real-time information can be supplied during emergencies,” said IAIS, a subsidiary of Railroad Development Corporation (RDC), which is a member of the RailPulse coalition.

“This new hazmat-training tank car, IAIS 0911, is a testament to our commitment to safety and community preparedness,” IAIS Chief Safety and Sustainability Officer Greg Wilson said. “It exemplifies our collaboration with first responders, business partners, and organizations like Operation Lifesaver to promote rail safety. We look forward to continuing our close work with emergency personnel across our network to support and enhance their training efforts.”

Based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, IAIS operates in the Midwest between Chicago, Peoria, and the Omaha areas. It is one of the only U.S. regional railroads that interchange with all six Class I’s.

Separately, Ida Molloy Posner, Vice President–Strategic Planning at RDC was recently selected as a “Fast Tracker” in Railway Age’s 25 Under 40 program for 2025.
