U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy on July 15 announced $488 million in awards from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program for 30 projects across the country, including nearly $3 million to support rail networks in enhancing multimodal surface transportation.

The funding, which will also support critical roadway, transit, maritime, and aviation infrastructure improvements, aims to “improve safety, reduce congestion, and spur economic growth,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Examples of rail projects that will receive funding include $2 million for the Snohomish County Everett Intermodal Yard and Curve Improvements in Snohomish County, Wash. This includes the preliminary design for upgrades to the Snohomish County Everett Intermodal Yard and surrounding rail infrastructure within the BNSF Northwest Division’s Bellingham Subdivision. Planned improvements include constructing approximately 13,000 feet of new mainline track and a 4,300-foot siding west of the existing Rogers mainline, reconfiguring the former mainline into yard storage tracks, and relocating the Rogers mainline westward to improve curve geometry and operational efficiency. Additional projects include Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) Train Control Modernization Program and Trinity Metro’s TEXRail Extension Project.

America’s BUILD program delivered awards to the most competitive projects out of more than 800 applications requesting more than $10 billion. Funding is evenly distributed between urban and rural communities, with each receiving $244 million in awards. Maximum awards are capped at $25 million. These projects, USDOT says, were selected based on statutory criteria requiring a comprehensive examination of safety, project readiness, and cost effectiveness.
