USDOT Approves $3.2B for 180 Infrastructure Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) on May 6 reported signing off on 180 infrastructure grants, totaling more than $3.2 billion. Grants to be administered by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will support 24 projects for freight and passenger rail/transit, valued at a total of $282.4 million.

According to the USDOT, the funded projects are part of a “backlog” of more than 3,200 projects inherited from the previous Administration; grants were never obligated to them.

The Department said it “is working diligently to accelerate the distribution of these long-overdue funds and address core infrastructure projects.” As part of this process, it said it is removing DEI, Green New Deal, and social justice requirements.

Following is a detailed breakdown of the 24 rail-related projects that will now receive grants through the FRA:

Below is breakdown of grants that other USDOT operating administrations will distribute:

Federal Transit Administration:

  • Low or No Emission (Bus) Grants: 30 projects ($494 million)
  • Tribal Transit: 6 projects ($3.5 million) 

Maritime Administration:

  • Port Infrastructure Development Program: 2 projects ($70 million)
  • Transportation Demonstration Program: 1 project ($38 million)

Federal Aviation Administration:

  • Airport Improvement Program: 3 projects ($1.95 million)
  • Airport Terminal Program: 33 projects ($277.1 million)

Federal Highway Administration:

  • Bridge Investment Program: 17 projects ($1.4 billion)
  • National Scenic Byway Program: 1 project ($342,000) 

OST-P:

  • Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD): 4 projects ($60 million)
  • Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA): 6 projects ($262 million)
  • National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega): 1 project ($9.9 million)
  • Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program (Rural): 5 projects ($189 million)
  • Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A): 6 projects ($14.6 million) 

OST-R: 

  • Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART): 27 projects ($90.6 million) 

OST-X: 

  • Payments for Small Community Air Service Development Program: 14 projects ($12 million)
