The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 70 new rapid transit trainsets and a CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system.
The trainset procurement consists of 55 to replace aging equipment on Line 2 and 15 for the Yonge North and Scarborough Subway Extension Projects. The CBTC procurement is for a new Automatic Train Control (ATC) system on Line 2. Alstom’s Urbalis 400 technology has been deployed on Line 1, including the York Spadina Subway Extension.
The TTC is currently developing a State-of-Good-Repair program to maintain the existing Line 2 equipment until the new trainsets are delivered starting in 2030. The new trainsets’ design is expected to be of an open-gangway, articulated configuration like the TTC’s newest equipment, the Alstom (formerly Bombardier) “Toronto Rocket” cars. The RFP also includes options for up to an additional 150 trainsets to meet the future needs for network growth and eventual replacement of equipment on Line 1.
“Line 2 moves hundreds of thousands of people across the city daily, connecting people from Etobicoke to Scarborough,” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers. “The RFP for new trains is critical towards ensuring that Line 2 can continue to transport riders across the city in a safe and reliable manner for many years to come.”
