Hyundai Rotem USA announced April 30 that it has signed a contract with Kinkisharyo International (KILLC) for the final assembly of 182 new Hyundai Rotem railcars, with an option for an additional 50, for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro).

Under this contract, KILLC will perform the final assembly work of the railcars at its facility in Palmdale, Calif. The assembly process, scheduled from 2026 through 2030, will “ensure that the new HR5000 rail cars meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency before entering service,” the company said. “By leveraging KILLC’s established infrastructure and expertise in rail vehicle assembly, Hyundai Rotem aims to enhance the operational reliability and passenger experience of Metro’s transit system.”

“This partnership with Kinkisharyo International reinforces Hyundai Rotem’s commitment to delivering high-quality, efficient rail solutions for the growing needs of urban transit in Los Angeles,” said Hyundai Rotem USA CEO Chunghyeon Charles Hong. “By leveraging local assembly expertise, we are ensuring timely delivery and supporting the regional economy and workforce.”

The collaboration with KILLC “builds upon Hyundai Rotem’s experience supplying rail vehicles to LA Metro and reflects its dedication to strengthening North America’s public transportation infrastructure,” the company said.
