“This striking locomotive honors our rich history with Conrail, which operated passenger trains throughout New Jersey from 1976 to 1983 and was the immediate corporate predecessor to NJ Transit Rail Operations,” the agency wrote in a Facebook post. “Many of the rail lines, stations, and rolling stock that formed the original NJ Transit Rail came directly from Conrail, and most of our railroad operating employees at that time had previously served with them.
“Today, Conrail and NJ Transit still maintain an operating relationship on the Raritan Valley and Atlantic City Lines and collaborate on other projects and services as well. We are grateful for Conrail’s support in allowing us to showcase these historic logos in our Heritage program.
“We selected No. 4208 as our Conrail heritage unit to honor the eight railroad companies in New Jersey that ultimately became part of Conrail. Be on the lookout for this locomotive leading NJ Transit trains in the coming months,” NJ Transit concluded in the post.
