MBTA CAF Type 10 LRV.

The 2024 edition of the Railway Age and Railway Track & Structures Light Rail Conference will take place this November 13-14 in San Diego, where modern LRT in the United States emerged more than 40 years ago. As always, three main themes anchor this premier rail industry event: Planning, Engineering and Operations.

WSP USA Senior Vice President/Senior Project Manager, Northeast Lead, Freight Rail National Business Line Rachel J. Burckhardt, P.E. once again joins the Railway Age and Railway Track & Structures Light Rail Conference agenda. Burckhardt, an expert on Boston’s rail transit system and among the most accomplished women in rail transit, will present on the MBTA’s (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) planning for its new Type 10 LRV, dubbed the “Super Car” because of its length, and the changes to stations, curvature, shops, etc. to accommodate it.

The 100%-low-floor Type 10, manufactured by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for the MBTA Green Line, is a whopping 54% longer than the existing rolling stock, and will be equipped with new safety and accessibility features. The MBTA ordered 102 Type 10 cars in late 2022, at a cost of $810 million. The cars are expected to enter service in 2027, and will replace the Kinki Sharyo Type 7 and AnsaldoBreda Type 8 cars.
