TTC Conference Draws Hundreds of Attendees

(ENSCO)
Hundreds of railroad professionals from government, industry and academia gathered in Pueblo, Colo., on Oct. 22-23 for the 2nd Annual Transportation Technology Center (TTC) Conference & Tour.

Hosted by ENSCO, Inc., and Wheel Rail Seminars, the event featured two days of presentations, demonstrations, networking, and a behind-the scenes tour of the world’s largest rail testing facility.

Held at the Pueblo Convention Center, the first day of the conference included technical sessions covering a broad range of topics—from the current state of tank car testing and ballast research to emerging strategies for rail cyber and physical security.

Day 1 at the Pueblo Convention Center (ENSCO)

Between presentations, representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and Department of Transportation (DOT) connected with industry experts from railroads, transit agencies, suppliers, and universities. Opening remarks, delivered by FRA’s Associate Administrator for the Office of Research, Data, and Innovation Mark Patterson and ENSCO President Jeff Stevens, emphasized the role of technology and collaboration in advancing the rail industry.

“We must be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in our industry when it comes to safety, security, and resiliency,” said Stevens. “TTC offers a unique environment for putting your ideas and products to the test. Together, we can all play a part in enhancing the overall experience for those who work on and rely on our railways.”

One such challenge was outlined in a keynote address by Amtrak’s Executive Vice President for Service Delivery & Operations, Gery M. Williams, who emphasized “the urgency of addressing customer delays caused by rising summer temperatures in the northeastern U.S. corridor.”

Day 2 – TTC Tour (ENSCO)

Day two provided attendees with unique access to the TTC, a 52-square-mile facility owned by the USDOT’s FRA and operated by ENSCO for ongoing rail infrastructure and equipment research, testing, and training. Highlights included keynote addresses from Dr. Firas Ibrahim, P.E., Director of the Office of Research, Development, and Technology at USDOT, and FRA Administrator Amit Bose, who both emphasized “the critical role of innovation and collaboration in advancing rail safety and infrastructure.” The immersive experience also provided visitors with a guided tour of the Rail Dynamics Laboratory, where advanced machinery demonstrates wheel/rail interaction dynamics. Additional highlights included a live firefighting robot demonstration at the Ambipar Response Training Center (ARTC) and a track demonstration over a section with engineered irregularities to assess dynamic train car behavior.

The event concluded with a powerful, full-scale demonstration of a high-speed grade crossing collision, showcasing “the raw force and critical importance of rail safety.” The 3rd Annual TTC Conference is scheduled for Oct. 7-8, 2025, in Pueblo, Colo., with more information to follow in the coming months.
