LRW Scholarship Applications Due June 6

The League of Railway Women (LRW) is still accepting applications for three scholarships—the Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship, the Future of Railroading Scholarship, and the new Sue Black Memorial Scholarship—for the 2025-26 school year. Applications are due June 6, 2025.

The $5,000 Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a woman pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree and seeking to further her career in the rail industry. It honors the memory of former LRW President Connie Sumara, a LRW founder and the group’s longest-serving President.

Among the eligibility requirements: The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; be currently employed by a railroad or railway-related business (such as a supplier) for at least 12 months; and be currently enrolled, at a minimum, as a part-time student (six-hours per spring and fall semester) at an accredited/post-secondary institution leading to an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. The $3,000 Future of Railroading Scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree, with an interest in supporting the rail industry.

Among the eligibility requirements: The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be currently enrolled, at a minimum, as a part-time student (six-hours per spring and fall semester) at an accredited/post-secondary institution leading to an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. The Sue Black Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by The Greenbrier Companies, will award $5,000 to a student pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in the rail industry and is in financial need. According to LRW, the funds will be paid at the beginning of the fall 2024 school term following the applicant’s selection and after receiving proof of enrollment, and the distribution of funds will be administered by the LRW Scholarship Chair and disbursed to the suitable official of the recipient’s institution.

Among the eligibility requirements: The applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be able to prove financial need (e.g., FAFSA form). Additionally, they must be currently enrolled, at a minimum, as a part-time student (six-hours per spring and fall semester) at an accredited/post-secondary institution leading to an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree.
