Cummins Exhibits Switcher Power Module at Railway Interchange
The power module upgrades switcher locomotives to Tier 4 compliance, according to the manufacturer. Designed for 1,000-h.p. to 1,500-h.p. repowers, it is said to deliver “greater fuel efficiency and reliability.”
“We pre-assemble the entire unit, including the engine, alternator, air intake, and exhaust, on a base skid,” reports Cummins, which notes that the unit also features a SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions system. A separate cooling package is mounted to the locomotive frame with plumbing to and from the engine.
The module, a “drop-in solution,” can be used on multiple locomotive models. Cummins reports that it can work with a locomotive manufacturer or rebuilder on any modifications to the frame and/or hatch, as well as electronic wiring and controls.
Available now, it is said to be in use at eight locations with approximately 15 on order.
Cummins also offers the QSK50 power module for 2,400 h.p. repowers.
