Bohr Electronics on March 5 reported acquiring the assets of Central Railway MFG, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based manufacturer of custom onboard equipment and software for the rail industry. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Central Railway MFG will now be known as CRM, a Bohr Electronics Company.

Bohr Electronics, an Alderman Enterprises company, specializes in manufacturing, remanufacturing, and engineering solutions for locomotive electrical and electro-mechanical parts and components. It will incorporate CRM’s portfolio of manufactured products, including event recorders, energy management systems, networking solutions, and crew safety technologies.

“By combining Bohr’s repair expertise with these advanced technologies, Bohr and CRM can better meet the specific needs of railroads,” Bohr Electronics said. “This integration is expected to offer more value and quicker turnaround times compared to other market players.” The company noted that it has a history in repair and return, remanufacturing outright, and engineering solutions for modern locomotives and legacy systems, and manufactures its own brand of testing equipment, cables, and harnesses.

CRM’s intellectual property and engineering staff will become part of the Bohr Electronics team at its corporate headquarters and production facility in Chattanooga, Tenn. Stephen Smith, Founder and President of CRM, will serve as a consultant during the transition, according to Bohr Electronics.

“This strategic acquisition of CRM’s assets marks a major step for Bohr Electronics in expanding our footprint in the railroad electronics manufacturing sector,” Bohr Electronics CEO Dan Marks said. “It is an opportunity to combine our 67 years of technological expertise with CRM’s excellent reputation for product development and support.”

Ben Brown, Founder of Alderman Enterprises, commented: “We at Alderman Enterprises are enthusiastic about this asset purchase, as it aligns perfectly with our strategic vision for Bohr. This move is more than a growth opportunity; it is a significant step in our long-term plan to innovate and lead in the industry.”

“This acquisition by Bohr Electronics is a testament to CRM’s value and reputation for developing tailored solutions that meet both hardware and software requirements for rail equipment,” Stephen Smith said. “We are confident that under Bohr’s and Alderman’s leadership, the legacy and quality of CRM’s products will continue to thrive.”

In a related development, Bohr Electronics announced Dec. 6 that it had been awarded multiple million-dollar contracts to supply fully furnished electrical cabinets for Class I railroad operators’ locomotive rebuild programs beginning in 2024. Customer names were not released.
