R. J. Corman Railroad Wins NRC’s 2024 Small Project of the Year
According to the release, this is the second year in a row that R. J. Corman Railroad Services has won the Small Project of the Year Award. The award is named for projects less than $10 million. R. J. Corman was recognized for this award at NRC’s annual conference in Marco Island, Florida this year.
For this year’s award, the project included an approach “to material stockpiling and distribution, utilizing hi-rail rotary dump trucks to efficiently handle over 22,000 tons of ballast.” R. J. Corman worked with Amtrak and CSX on the project to ensure safety and a smooth operation in the CSX New England Zone. The project presented challenges in the form of limited access and confined work areas with three crossings and live train operations. However, the project was successful and improved “the reliability and schedule flexibility of both the Amtrak Downeaster and CSX freight trains, supporting the addition of a sixth daily Downeaster round-trip between Wells and Brunswick, Maine.”
CSX Director of Construction Engineering North David C. Clark (P.E.) said, “The project, which entailed the construction of nearly 6 miles of siding between Wells, Maine and North Berwick, Maine, demanded extensive project planning, adaptive strategies, and meticulous production tracking . . . R. J. Corman Railroad Services exhibited exceptional skill and dedication throughout the project. Their team adeptly managed the placement of over 18,000 ties and 32,000 track feet of rail, in addition to the stockpiling and distribution of over 22,000 tons of ballast.”
R. J. Corman Railroad Services stated the recognition emphasizes its “unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality projects and [its] ability to consistently meet and exceed industry standards.” It is proud of its team’s achievements and thankful to the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association for the recognition for a second year in a row.
