Pennsylvania Transformer Technology LLC will receive a $400,000 grant from NCCR Invests, the North Carolina Railroad Company’s (NCRR) economic development arm, for a facility expansion project in Raeford, N.C., which is served by Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad.

Based in Canonsburg, Pa., Pennsylvania Transformer Technology LLC is a manufacturer of power and distribution transformers for the electric utility, municipal power, renewable energy, and industrial markets. It will build an additional 300,000 square feet across two facilities in Hoke County, N.C., to increase its manufacturing capacity there and “contribute to reducing domestic supply chain shortages of critical transformer equipment,” NCRR reported Feb. 20.

The funding from NCRR will assist with the costs of construction and materials needed for new on-site rail infrastructure operations. The project is expected to produce approximately 60 railcars per year at build-out.

The complete expansion project is estimated to cost $102.5 million and generate about 217 new jobs. It will also be supported by a performance-based grant of $800,000 from the One North Carolina Fund.

“We built our first factory in Hoke County, N.C., back in 1992 and have been proudly manufacturing power transformers in this community for over 30 years,” Pennsylvania Transformer Technology LLC President Sandeep Chakravarty said. “We are thrilled to further invest in and expand our operations in Hoke County.”

“We are proud to partner with Pennsylvania Transformer Technology as they grow in Hoke County,” NCRR President and CEO Carl Warren said. “Investing in rail infrastructure not only strengthens the energy supply chain but also drives economic growth and opportunity in the region. This project exemplifies how strategic rail investments can fuel industrial expansion and job creation across North Carolina.”

In addition to NCRR, other key partners in this project include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, North Carolina General Assembly, North Carolina Department of Transportation and its Rail Division, North Carolina Community College System, Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad, Golden LEAF Foundation, North Carolina’s Southeast, Hoke County, Raeford/Hoke Economic Development, city of Raeford, and Piedmont Natural Gas.

Separately, in 2024 NCCR awarded a $250,000 grant to Innovative Construction Group LLC to help develop a new manufacturing facility in Siler City, N.C., to be served by Norfolk Southern.
