The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) presents the Railroad Accidents/Incidents (Part 225) education seminar to a sold-out crowd; spots are still open for its final training seminar of 2024. Also, the Safety and Training Committee develops a new template to teach contractors host-railroad specific rules.

Sold-Out Crowd Learns Railroad Accident/Incident (Part 225)

Seventy-four rail industry professionals attended ASLRRA’s Railroad Accident/Incident (Part 225) training seminar in New Orleans, La., on Aug. 27-28—the most ever to participate in such an event, the association reported in the Aug. 28 edition of its weekly Views & News newsletter. Led by Vice President of Safety and Compliance JR Gelnar and Senior Vice President of Education and Business Sabrina Waiss, the seminar also featured 10 representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), including a Part 225 expert, Part 225 attorney, Part 225 program analyst, Part 225 chief inspector, railroad safety specialists, and a short line expert.

“Having a large group of subject-matter experts gave seminar attendees an in-depth look at Part 225 and helped them gain a more complete understanding of all aspects of railroad accident and incident reporting regulations,” according to the association, which noted that in another training seminar “first,” ASLRRA Preferred Provider MaxAccel sponsored a reception for attendees.

Gelnar and Waiss will host ASLRRA’s final training seminar of the year Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Leadership Development–Regulatory Module seminar “will cover a wide range of material to help participants improve their knowledge of federal regulatory agencies and railroad rules while bolstering their managerial and leadership skills,” the association said.

This event will be co-located with the Eastern and Southern Region Meeting, but a separate registration is required. Click here for more information or to register for one of the few remaining spots.

New Template to Help Members Meet Training Requirements

ASLRRA’s Safety and Training Committee is offering a new template, “Part 214 Roadway Worker Supplemental Training for Contractors,” to help member railroads educate contractors on host-railroad-specific rules. It is available in the Compliance Templates section on ASLRRA’s website under Part 214 and Part 243.

“Every roadway worker, roadway maintenance machine (RMM) operator, watchman, lookout, and flagman on a railroad’s property must know that railroad’s on-track safety procedures and rules,” ASLRRA reported in the Aug. 28 edition of its weekly Views & News newsletter. “This new template, which has been approved by the FRA, can be used as a supplement to annual roadway worker protection training.”

According to the association, additional host-railroad-specific training is required for roadway workers in charge (RWICs) and lone workers. Members can log in online to access other templates for roadway worker protection, safety-related railroad employee training, and more.

In related news, Nicole Brewin has returned to the rail industry as ASLRRA Vice President of Congressional Affairs.
