CSX, SMART-TD CSRA Reach Tentative Agreement on Paid Sick Leave

CSX announced May 22 that it has reached a tentative agreement with the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division CSRA (SMART-TD CSRA), which represents trainmen, conductors and yardmen on territories of the former A&WP, WSSP, L&N, NC&STL and SCL railroads, to provide paid sick leave benefits.

According to CSX, the agreement with SMART-TD CSRA, which is pending ratification by union members, marks the 10th such agreement that the Class I has reached with its union-represented employees since February. Most of the company’s unionized workers now have paid sick leave benefits.

Other unions that have negotiated paid sick leave for their members include the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division B&O (SMART-TD B&O); the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Mechanical Department (SMART-MD); the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way (BMWED), which represents track workers; the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC), which represents mechanical employees; the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), which represents railroad machinists; and the National Conference of Firemen and Oilers (NCFO), which represents CSX’s utility workers.

“The constructive cooperation that has enabled this initiative to move forward is a credit to the willingness of our union organizations to engage with CSX and recognize the sincere effort we are making to improve the work experience for our front-line employees,” said Joe Hinrichs, CSX president and chief executive officer. “We will continue to work toward additional agreements as we listen to our employees and collaborate on solutions that benefit everyone who wants to see our railroad grow.”
