CPKC

CPKC railroaders across Canada and the U.S. raised more than $550,000 and awareness during the 6th annual Spin for a Veteran event held on Sept. 21, 2024, at CPKC locations in Calgary and Kansas City, Mo.

“We thank the 265 participants in this year’s Spin for a Veteran event and all the railroaders who helped make it such a success,” CPKC stated in a release. “We have a proud history of supporting the veteran community and we understand the challenges many veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life. It is our privilege to work with the Homes for Heroes Foundation and Veterans Community Project to support the integral work they do.”

Since the event started in 2017, more than $3 million has been raised to assist in building tiny homes and support veterans with the re-integration into civilian life, according to CPKC.

Twenty-four teams participated in the 12-hour spin competition this year, riding more than 8,740 kilometers (5,430 miles), more than the driving distance from Calgary, Alberta, to Monterrey, Mexico, and back. The CPKC Cyclopaths won the award for the longest distance rode, and the CPKC Heavy Haulers won for the most funds raised.

“We are grateful to have the continued support of CPKC through the Spin for a Veteran event,” said Homes for Heroes Foundation President and CEO Brad Field. “This event has proven to be highly successful in supporting the Homes for Heroes Foundation and our veteran tenants. For me and our entire staff, it is a humbling experience to witness the community come together to support those who have served and protected our country.”

“We’re grateful to have partners like CPKC join us in our mission to fix veteran homelessness,” said Bryan Meyer, Co-Founder and CEO of Veterans Community Project. “Their support and that of this year’s ‘Spin for a Veteran’ participants is an example of the importance of communities coming together to address this important issue. Most importantly, this event will directly contribute toward our mission by enabling us to provide transitional housing, wraparound services, and lifelong support to veterans in need.”
