CN on July 3 announced that its net-zero by 2050 target has been validated by SBTi. In using a science-based approach to its climate commitments, CN and the broader North American rail industry are “aligned to reducing emissions and decarbonizing to deliver a sustainable future for all,” the Class I noted.

CN says it “continues to maintain its position as a leader in sustainability while continuing to progress towards its sustainability targets,” as highlighted in the company’s newly released 2023 Sustainability Data Supplement Report.

CN’s annual sustainability disclosures are reported in accordance with “rigorous international standards,” including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.
After announcing the release of the 2023 Sustainability Data Supplement Report and 2023 performance on key ESG targets, errors were identified related to 2022 and 2023 marine vessel fleet data, CN announced July 17. Errors have been corrected, including CN’s 2023 progress towards its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity target changing from 19.7% to 18.6%. In related news, CN is also announced that it has earned a place on Corporate Knights’ Best 50 Corporate Citizens list for the sixteenth year in a row, as well as placed first among its peers within the freight transport, all modes category. CN’s first place ranking among its peers stems from the company’s efforts to “consistently improve its sustainability performance,” the Class I noted.

BNSF
BNSF on July 5 announced that it has honored 109 customers with the railroad’s annual Product Stewardship Award for the safe transportation of hazardous materials by rail.
Companies receiving the award, which was implemented in 1997, transported an established minimum of loaded tank cars of hazardous materials with zero non-accident releases during last year’s full transportation cycle. These customers also upheld the ethics of Product Stewardship under the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® initiative.
