Class I Briefs: CN, CPKC

CN sends a “Supply Chain Salute” to Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) on the announcement of the expansion of its canola crush plant at Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Also, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) announces that the famed “Empress” steam locomotive will return to the rails this summer.

CN on April 12 sent a “Supply Chain Salute” and a “big congratulations,” via a Twitter post, to LDC, a global merchant and processor of agricultural goods, on the announcement of the expansion of its canola crush plant at Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, which the Class I says will “more than double the facility’s capacity to more than two million metric tons.”

LDC has operated its canola processing complex in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, since 2009, employing approximately 120 people today, in the production of food grade canola oil and feed meal. This industry-leading facility, LDC says, is strategically located in the country’s most productive agricultural zone, where canola is the dominant crop, and benefits from dual rail and good road infrastructure. The enlarged complex will create further operational synergies and enhance canola seed sourcing capabilities.

Construction of the additional canola crushing line is expected to begin later this year, reinforcing LDC’s capacity to “supply food, feed and energy customers,” the company said.

“This investment supports the Group’s strategic growth plans by reinforcing core merchandizing activities, in this case with additional capacity to originate and process Canadian canola seeds to provide nourishment for people and livestock,” said LDC CEO Michael Gelchie. “It also positions LDC as a strategic feedstock provider to renewable energy producers and accelerates our contribution to a global energy transition that we are excited to be a part of.”

“This project reflects our long-term commitment to North America as a key market for LDC, both in terms of origination and distribution, and is expected to contribute to continued local economic development,” said LDC’s Country Manager for Canada Brian Conn.

The famed “Empress” steam locomotive No. 2816 is set to return to the rails this summer, a month-long journey starting in mid-July with a business train from Calgary to Lazaro Cardens, according to a CPKC source.

Canadian Pacific’s (CP) hydrogen fuel cell-powered freight locomotive, CP 1001, recently pulled the Empress, CP’s 1930-vintage steam locomotive, at its Calgary mechanical shop (see video below). “A century ago, 2816 entered service moving people and goods across Canada,” CP (now CPKC) wrote in a Nov. 16 LinkedIn post.
