U.S. Class I railroads hauled 443,049 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending July 5, 2025, the AAR reported July 9. Total carloads came in at 204,513, increasing 4.8%, and intermodal volume was 238,536 containers and trailers, rising 5.2% from the same week in 2024.
Eight of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2024. They included metallic ores and metals, up 1,853 carloads, to 20,319; coal, up 1,642 carloads, to 52,351; and nonmetallic minerals, up 1,636 carloads, to 28,346. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2024 were forest products, down 160 carloads, to 7,798; and farm products excl. grain, and food, down 153 carloads, to 15,387.
For the first 27 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 5,910,080 carloads, up 2.5% from the same point last year; and 7,221,865 intermodal units, up 5.1% from 2024. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was 13,131,945 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 3.9% percent compared to last year.
North American rail volume for the week ending July 5, 2025, on 9 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 301,800 carloads, up 2.2 % compared with the same week last year, and 323,164 intermodal units, a 6.9% rise from 2024. Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 624,964 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.6%. North American rail volume for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was 18,170,855 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.8% compared with 2024.
Fo the week ending July 5, 2025, Canadian railroads reported 81,838 carloads, dropping 8.3%, and 73,636 intermodal units, up 10.8% compared with the same week in 2024. For the first 27 weeks of 2025, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 4,394,093 carloads, containers and trailers, up 1.2%.
Mexican railroads reported 15,449 carloads for the week ending July 5, 2025, up 40.9% compared with the same week last year, and 10,992 intermodal units, up 21.0%. Cumulative volume on Mexican railroads for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was 644,817 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers, a 7.5% drop from the same point in 2024.
