As part of asset management\, it is important to consider the increasing risks from climate change. Climatic risks to infrastructure can be immediate short term risks (e.g. extreme weather forecast for tomorrow) or over a longer term (e.g. future adverse climates). A climate change risk assessment assesses the severity and likelihood of climate related risks over the near and long term. We can understand these risks and their impact by investigating hazards\, vulnerability and exposure alongside impacts. Many railway assets have not been maintained and managed for the weather we are experiencing today\, let alone in the future\,and consequently they are not resilient to extreme weather or future climates. In order to become more resilient\, we must adapt. By adapting we are managing the present and future risks associated with extreme weather and climate change. This can be done incrementally; this process is typically referred to as adaptation pathways and ties in with the idea of resilience over the lifecycle of railway assets. As the concept of adaptation is relatively recent and development of it is still in its infancy in many railway systems\, it is crucial to properly define a comprehensive railway climate change adaptation framework. It is also important to develop a maturity assessment to properly evaluate whether or not a railway system is on an effective pathway towards adaptation and to what level of progress they have made. \nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Chen-Yu Lin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Transportation and Logistics Management at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Dr. Lin’s research interests include railway safety and risk analysis\, rail hazardous material transportation\, shared-use rail corridors\, and railway resilience and climatic risk. Dr. Lin obtained his bachelor’s degree from National Taiwan University and a Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, all in civil and environmental engineering.

DESCRIPTION:MxV Rail (formerly TTCI) and Amsted Rail will host the 20th International Wheelset Congress (IWC)\, to be held May 8-11 in Chicago. Registration is now open. \nUNIFE and its ERWA (European Railway Wheels Association) committee are the four-day event’s organizers. \nIWC will focus on the latest technologies and advancements of rail wheelset components and performance\, with a goal of increasing the productivity\, efficiency and safety of a variety of rail modes\, according to MxV Rail. The theme of the event\, featuring 70-plus technical papers from 20 countries\, is “Interdependent Ecosystem of Wheelsets.” \nIWC is expected to draw more than 300 attendees from worldwide freight\, passenger and transit railways\, including operators; equipment builders; component suppliers; academia; government; and regulatory and standards organizations. Traditionally convened once every three years\, this is the first time IWC has been hosted in North America since 2004. The 19th IWC was held in Venice\, Italy in 2019. DESCRIPTION:2023 Southeast Rail Forum\n\nSoutheastern States Department of Transportation Rail Divisions and the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) North Carolina Triangle Chapter are jointly hosting a regional forum on rail issues focused on eight Southeastern states (DC\, VA\, NC\, TN\, SC\, GA\, AL and FL). \nSoutheast Rail Forum (SRF): Ready to Build is scheduled for March 22-24\, 2023 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Crystal City\, Arlington\, VA  (Washington\, D.C) \nThe purpose of this forum is to: \n– Bring focus to the efforts made by the Southeastern States (District of Columbia\, Virginia\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, South Carolina\, Georgia\, Florida\, and Alabama) to unify their visions for the role of rail in the region through the multi-state Compact agreement and the Federally-led regional study for the Southeast Rail Corridor. \n– Highlight the economic benefits of a coordinated approach to regional rail planning. \n– Identify the role of trends and activities in intermodal freight transportation: Rail\, Ports\, Trucking\, and Shipping Hubs. \n– Share examples where co-mingled passenger and freight services can work— and where it cannot. \n– Provide opportunities for multi-state networking and sharing of beneficial information. \n– Provide opportunities to inspect area freight\, intermodal and passenger projects. \nInvited speakers include Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) officials\, State Transportation Secretaries\, State Rail Officials\, Railroad Executives\, industry experts\, and local and state political leaders throughout the region.
